About the role
Reporting to the Airworthiness and Safety Manager, you will work across multiple project delivery teams to define and implement the project-level safety plan for new UAS, modifications, and associated systems.
You will also have the opportunity to help shape our Safety Management System to meet future civil and military regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
Acting as the Project Safety Engineer, develop and implement tailored project safety plans in line with our Safety Management System
Undertake hazard identification, analysis and management, including development and maintenance of hazard log(s)
Apply system safety engineering techniques at UAS, system and sub-system level
Ensure that derived safety requirements are identified, captured, managed, and satisfied
Produce safety artefacts, including Safety Assessment Reports, to support the Certificate of Design
Lead Project Safety Committee meetings in line with our Safety Management System
Provide day-to-day advice and guidance to project teams on aspects of systems safety to inform architectural and system-level development
Routinely engage with UK CAA and MOD project stakeholders through project-based meetings and represent Callen-Lenz at customer meetings
Actively promote our Engaged Air Safety Culture and champion product safety within our project-based teams / functions
Perform other related duties as required

Skills and Experience
Qualifications:
Essential: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, with Honours, in an Engineering or Science subject
Desirable: Formal qualification in System Safety Engineering, e.g. MSc Safety Critical Systems Engineering
Essential:
Proven experience working at the design-level, engaging with design engineers across the full range of engineering disciplines
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate at all levels, both internally and externally
Ability to develop well structured safety arguments, and produce clear and concise written reports / documents, including Safety Assessment Reports
Experience of using common system safety techniques & tools
FHA, FMEA / FMECA
FTA, ET, Markov Modelling, e.g. Reliability Workbench
Safety Cases, e.g. Aderlard Safety Case Editor
Bowtie, e.g. BowTie XP
Ability to work well in a team
Self-driven and enthusiastic
Desirable:
Experience of uncrewed systems sector, specifically UK CAA / EASA / MAA Specific Category UAS, ideally with understanding of UAS operations
Experience of applying CAA CAP722 series and / or MRP RA1600 series
Experience of aerospace / defence procurement and certification processes, in a civil or military context, at aircraft and / or system-level
Experience of applying Def-Stan 00-056, ARP4754B / 4761A, and awareness of DO-178C / 254
Awareness of wider aspects including cyber security for airworthiness and / or environmental cases, ideally with experience in these areas
Experience of working in a formal design organisation (DAOS / Pt21J) undertaking system safety activities within an established SMS
Experience of systems engineering and requirements management, including use of requirements management tools, e.g. DOORS and identification and management of Derived Safety Requirements
Personal Attributes
Must be a British Citizen or have an existing right to work in the UK
Ability to commit to occasional national and international travel
A full valid UK driving license
Ability to hold Security Clearance – 5 years residence in the UK
